The initiative is run by the Restaurants Association of Ireland and has proved hugely successful for those ‘destinations’ and towns picked as winners in recent years.

Community groups get together, local producers are working with shops, the Chamber of Commerce, anyone really with a vested interest in food tourism.

As a measure of success, 2018’s win for Kilkenny has created room for two new businesses – Kilkenny Foodie Tours and Kilkenny Tasting Tours.

Previous Foodie Destinations Winners

Kilkenny were named overall Foodie Destinations winner for 2018 with Kinsale, Co. Cork, picking up ‘Ireland’s Foodie Town’.

At the time, judges said Kilkenny had developed “an eclectic and diverse food and tourism offering which includes top quality gastro pub food, a wide range of Irish and international food offerings and even Michelin Star restaurants”.

West Cork, Boyne Valley and The Burren are among previous Foodie Destinations winners .

Applications can be submitted up to midday on 11 July. Kilkenny and Kinsale as 2018 winners will not be eligible this year, but can reapply next year.

If you’re curious and want to get your town, village or region involved, you’ll find all the details here.
