Foodie Roundup #1909

Hello March, and hello Foodie Roundup #1909.

It’s been a bananas week on the work front and I’m growing more thankful for little windows at the weekend to splash on food and get a read of the news.

Into the 9th of the Foodie Roundups for 2019 and I’ve got another ten stories from media land across the past week.

As always, if you’ve a story to share, don’t be afraid to get in touch. Email me, Tweet me, find me on Insta or Facebook and say hello.

Foodie Roundup #1909 (to Sunday 3 March)

  • Ireland has its sugar tax on fizzy drinks – so too does California where the “soda tax” has resulted in a dramatic cut in soda consumption according to Reuters.
  • Super foods – super on the money front, not always on the nutritional front suggests ABC Australia.
  • A piece in the Examiner earlier this week outlines how Irish restaurants will be forced into showing calories on menus, either by calorie count or a new traffic light system.
  • In the UK, coffee franchises are booming with 80% of Britons now visiting a coffee shop at least once a week, spending over €2,000 a year.
  • With coffee in mind, Ireland has a new national barista champion, and a new latte art champion as Catex came to a close.

  • Starbucks lovers will rejoice, at the very least in Tokyo where the world’s biggest franchise has just opened in a 32,000sq ft facility – and it looks phenomenal.
  • We’re fast becoming a nation of breakfast skippers, and you can skip breakfast all you want – but only if you step up your lunch game.
  • The BBC take a look at what could happen to food prices post-Brexit. That’s this month too as things stand.
  • Agriland have a spot on the new Bord Bia food and drink scholarships.
  • And “the munchies” may be a case of fact over fiction thanks to a report showing the huge increase in junk food purchases after the legalisation of recreational marijuana.

This week on the blog…

To wrap things up for Sunday, I had a look at Anne Neary’s new Kilkenny Tasting Tours; GIY’s Grow Cook Eat is back on the telly next week, and the All Ireland Chowder Cookoff is heading back to Kinsale in April.
