A cookbook produced by a Kilkenny city school has found its way onto the shortlist for this year’s AONTAS STAR awards.
The Intercultural School Cookbook, developed by St. John’s junior and senior schools in the city, has been nominated in the Health & Wellbeing category for this year’s awards. The awards themselves are a celebration of the work of exceptional initiatives empowering local communities through adult learning, AONTAS being the National Adult Learning Organisation in Ireland. The project at St. John’s was part of the school’s Family Learning Programme that brought together parents, grandparents and carers from the 27 different nationalities represented at the school – a far cry from what I remember my primary school days to be like.
The overall aim was to bring parents from diverse cultural backgrounds together through food, experiences and the sharing of cultures and it’s all been summed up in their Intercultural School Cookbook.
St. John’s project is on a shortlist of six tha includes the Community Food Club (Dublin), Mas Project (Antrim), Start360 Justice Services (Antrim), Social Therapeutic Horticulture Programme (Tipperary), Wellbeing at LCC Community Trust (Antrim). The STAR awards ceremony will take place on Friday 8 March at Croke Park, Dublin, as the highlight of the annual AONTAS Adult Learners’ Festival, running from 4-8 March.
