September is an interesting time of year.

A lot of people think about January as a jumping-off point for new ideas and new projects – ‘new year, new me’ and all that. But with autumn comes more new beginnings, back to school, off to college and in the case of LEO Kilkenny (Local Enterprise Office Kilkenny), their autumn training schedule.

One course of note is aimed at those thinking about starting a food business. Sure, you could throw the doors open in the morning, roll up your sleeves and put your summer-inspired plan into action, or you could take a breath and jump into a four-day course designed to help you understand your business idea, routes to market, costings, finance, branding and more.

Enter, the Regional Food Starer Programme, designed ‘to provide participants with information which will allow them to avoid the pit falls normally associated with this [business] journey.’ Better yet, you don’t even have to travel with the course set to run over four half days from 9.30am to 12.30pm on November 7, 14, 21 and 28. Participation – for €30 – is open to all start-up food businesses and entrepreneurs.

The first day of the course helps you explore your business idea, ensuring its feasibility. Day two looks at food safety and exploring routes to market with day three introducing finance and product costings for a food business. The fourth day explores distribution, branding and overall brand building.
