Ken On Food: Food In 5 Minutes podcast

For the third time this year, here’s a fresh helping of Food In 5 Minutes.

Part of the Ken On Food podcast, this is the little slice of food news you need in your week, served up fresh and in time for your Sunday morning cup of coffee though (I’m told) it’s a good listen at any stage of the week. With the cold snap in Ireland finally deciding to disappear for a few days (only to be replaced today by an orange weather warning and potentially wild windy conditions), I hope this post finds you in good form wherever you’re reading – or about to listen – from.

On the Irish side of things this week, stories from the food sector are being dominated by closures of restaurants and cafés in Cork, Donegal, Sligo, Dublin, the midlands and beyond with the sector described in the news as ‘carnage’. Overseas, two quirky stories have caught my eye this week including a new Guinness World Record and a look at what’s happening in Japan as spending on food looks to have been cut back by as much as 70% in some circles.

And as it’s the start of the year, announcements on the Irish Cheese Awards and Irish Restaurant Awards are out. Plus if you missed it on the blog this week and you’re mad for some new coffee, I’ve got a list of roasters who wil be delighted to ship fresh beans straight to your door this weather.
