From Highbank’s organic orchard syrup to Driver’s cider, and balsamic vinegar to providing a home for one of the country’s smallest distilleries that’s been yielding gin, rum, schnappes and more, Kilkenny-based Highbank Orchards have proven the versatility of the humble apple time and time again.
The next string to the Cuffesgrange-based family business is their Red Gate Tour, launched in the last fortnight or so, giving apple-curious visitors the opportunity to get a walk in the country air, virtually guided around the gardens and orchards by way of using QR-coded vernacular red gates and pillars.
Forged hundreds of years ago in the farmyard of Highbank and by other Irish blacksmiths, you can use your phone’s camera feature or a QR code reader app as a way to listen to the Calder-Potts family history and workings of their fifth-generation farm. Check the Instagram video above for an idea of what lies in store.
‘From pip to sip’ (I like that), you can have a nose around the organic woodlands and orchards, and enjoy the apples’ seasonality from blossom to harvest, ending with some tastings in the farm show. Tour admission includes a €5 voucher redeemable in the shop if you fancy bringing away some goodies, with complimentary tea or coffee provided post-walk.
Bookings are available now, weekday only, by visiting highbankorchards.com.
